Welcome to the home page for the 2015 Principios Invitational II (3rd-12th Grade) tournament hosted by Haddon E.S. (10115 Haddon Ave, Arleta 91331) on Nov 7, 2015 for Various students.

Status: Tournament Completed

*By popular demand, early bird pricing ($10 per elementary event, $15 all else) has been extended to Oct. 30th, 11:59 PM!

Registration is now open for our tournament, which is the only one to offer separate high school, middle school and elementary speaking events! We are the same group that runs the well-reviewed L.A. Orator's Cup every Spring, so feel free to look up our previous efforts as an indication of what you can expect, as we are proud to be a fan favorite for being friendly, running on time, running a fair and open tab room and giving out the largest and prettiest trophies outside of State & Nationals! We charge $10 for every elementary event and $15 for every middle school or high school event (each increasing by $10 if you exceed the registration deadline of Friday, October 30th at 11:59 PM). Double-entry is allowed within each of the patterns, but it is the responsibility of each student to rush to ensure he/she will be able to make both events within the allotted time for the round (notifying the judge where you will compete second is mandatory). In the case of double-entry with Congress, do your IE event ASAP and then go on to the Congress room. In the case of SpAr, finsih your SpAr event first, so as to ease the round management of your SpAr opponent. Judges are required for every four events registered (middle schoolers may judge elementary events and high schoolers may judge middle school and elementary events, adults may judge all events). Fines for not having a judge per every quartet of events will be steep because we want to encourage bringing sufficient judges, not because we want to bleed any team of their money: $15 per uncovered elementary event and $25 per uncovered middle or high school event.

This is our Fall "icebreaker" speech contest, called "Principios" because it means both "principles" and "beginnings" in Spanish. Thank you for considering joining us or contributing to our cause. We are the only contest to offer elementary, middle and high school divisions and our dream is to run an efficient and enjoyable tournament that 1) raises money to introduce speech and debate to underprivileged areas 2) extends the coached opportunity to compete to historically underrepresented areas and demographics 3) provides the entire forensics community the chance to convene in one place and provide encouragement, role modeling and mentorship to the future generations of speakers that are coming up the pipeline 4) Demystify the forensics process for new/underserved populations (who might not have access to experienced coaching) by allowing filming in IE/Congress rounds, such that new schools/students may use these as a basis for self-training and becoming more informed about what is expected (YOUR REGISTRATION CONSTITUTES YOUR TEAM'S WILLINGNESS TO BE FILMED/RECORDED AT PRINCIPIOS). We are into our third, successful year and are held in one of the areas whose participation we are trying to encourage.

Once again this year, Mr. Iain Lampert, newly-minted leader of the Western L.A. Co. District (National Speech & Debate Association), has kindly volunteered to run our tabroom. After Year One, our fundraisers were able to fund the training and decorated participation of Haddon Avenue, the first elementary from an impacted area to compete. Year Two brought in enough proceeds to support the debut this year of Roscoe Blvd Elementary. Both schools are in highly challenged neighborhoods, but are helmed by visionary principals who instantly saw the transformative capacity of forensics and authorized the first curricular inclusion of competitive speech at the elementary level in the history of the LA Unified School District. However, many of the children intending to compete do not have the means of purchasing appropriate shoes, slacks or jackets for the competition. If you are able to donate any funds or items to support the competitively-attired debut of these plucky students into the world of forensics, please let us know so we can provide you the proper information for delivery and tax write-off ability.

We will take entries in all events and divisions but reserve the right to collapse and elminate events if enough interest is not shown within the first two weeks of registration. We will be requiring prepayment of registration and judge fines before students are officially in the tournament. Registration online is no guarantee that your team will be allowed to compete until we notify you that your payment has been received and processed. To facilitate the instantaneous knowledge and confirmation that your payment has been received, we will be using Paypal (ravelasquez@yahoo.com) this year for the schools that aren't able submit checks in person or deposit in a specific checking account at a Citibank branch (contact us for the account number). Since we are fundraising for public schools in an impacted area, we need payments in advance to order our beautiful but EXPENSIVE trophies and will not accept/cash checks by mail that have not arrived by Thursday, October 22nd. Thus, we encourage Paypal, Citibank deposit or in-0person check dropoff at Haddon Avenue Elementary School to keep our funds liquid and prevent "check is in the mail" drama

Event descriptions are forthcoming but events that don't exist at Nationals generally use CA rules.
