What: SCJFL 3rd League Debate Tournament of the 2013-14 school year. Debate Only.

When: March 8th, 2014

Where: Don Bosco High School in San Gabriel

Events: Policy, PF, LD

Topics: PF = Voting Rights Act - NFL Feb Topic. LD = Resource Extraction - NFL Jan/Feb Topic

PF: Resolved: The Supreme Court rightly decided that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act violated the Constitution.

LD: Resolved: Developing countries should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction when the two are in conflict.

Time: Approx. 7AM-7PM

Judges: Anticipate a ratio of 1:4 for public forum and LD. We are going to need to flight both events, I'm assuming. If entry numbers are unexpectedly low for some reason, we may be able to single flight LD, in which case LD will have a ratio of 1:2. Policy will have a ratio of 1 judge per 2 entries, as it cannot be flighted, regardless of entry numbers.

Judge and Entry rankings: We will need all coaches to rank their debate entries in each event.

1. Please rank your entries. Here's how:

Let's say a coach brings 8 PF entries. The coach thinks Bob and Sue are his best team. He calls them PF Team A. Joe and Mary are his second best team. He calls them PF Team B. Helen and Ulysses are his third best team. He calls them PF Team C...... Qbert and Gil are his worst team of the 8. He calls them PF Team H.

2. Please rank your judges. Here's how:

Identify an individual who will be judging. Determine that individuals level of competence. Experienced varsity high school debaters, college debaters, coaches, and former debaters with experience, are given a 1. Novice high school debaters, experienced debate judges without actual competition/coaching experience, are given a 2. Smart, politically knowledgable, rational-minded, intelligent adults, who seem like they're likely to be good, unbiased judges, but have little to no actual judging experience, are given a 3. Random parents, people you don't know well enough to really say, people who are intimidated by the prospect of judging debate, people who are likely to put their own bias into the decision, are given a 4.

Registration will close at 5 PM on February 21st.
