Please advise everyone whose child is in INFORMATIVE!!***

Breaking News 2: Note the slight address change to 11016 Norris Ave. 91303!! Parking entrance on Herrick Ave!

Judging Orientation will take place in the auditorium & postings will be outside the auditorium. Campus map link below!

Food trucks will now NOT likely be on campus, so please make plans to bring food or patronize the 7-11 catty-corner across the street or the restaurants within a couple of blocks. Water, coffee, breakfast snacks & Subway sandwiches for lunch will be provided for judges!

Thank you to Principal Fajardo & Pacoima Charter for hosting! We'll be competing on FRIDAY, a national holiday (Veterans Day).

Introduction:

Welcome to the fourth annual "Principios" (meaning both "beginnings" & "principles" in Spanish), a tournament which seeks to raise funds to provide urban, public school children earlier awareness of and competitive access to interscholastic speech & debate (especially in Individual Events and Congressional Debate). We are EXCEEDINGLY proud to announce that a record number of urban school children from around the San Fernando Valley have been encouraged, coached and registered to compete in Principios 4, thanks to the participation of speech teams from all over the Southland! Thank you for breaking such tremendously impactful ground!

Registration:

Registration will open on Monday, October 16th. Double entry in each Patern will be allowed. Triple entry is also allowed in each Pattern UNLESS competing in Congress in Pattern A or SpAr in Pattern B, in which case you may only compete in TWO TOTAL EVENTS in the same pattern. In the case of SpAr, please go to your SpAr round first, then your second Pattern B event. In the case of Congress, quickly do your one other Pattern A event and then proceed to your Congress house/room. Students attempting to double and triple ener within a pattern assume all responsibility for notifying judges that they will be eventually showing up for their event. The contest will not be delayed because a student was not able to be judged within the time linits of a given round (approximately 75 minutes). Exceptions will only be made if the judge left before the correct end time of the round. Events which do not have three entries by November 3rd are subject to being closed or merged up into the next higher division version of the event (e.g. middle school Original Prose could be merged with high school Original Prose if it has fewer than three entries) but coaches will be notified and given the option to accept the change, drop their student at no cost or be refunded if they have already paid. In all cases, closure of an event would trigger a refund of fees.

Fees:

$15 per event. No team fees. $50 fine wlll appy for every instance of a school not meeting the "one judge for every 4 entries" rule PER PATTERN, so, for example, five entries with no judge leads to a $100 fine. Judges who are competitors in one Pattern are only available for half the rounds, so they are commensurately compensated half off ($25 instead of $50) of the missing judge fine for 4 UNCOVERED EVENTS. Fees need to be paid NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD (otherwise, we couldn't afford the pretty, heavy & LARGE TROPHIES we are known for), so don't count on adding nor paying for any students on the morning of the 10th. Fees & fines are due via electronic payment (Google Wallet at VelasquezAcademy@gmail.com or inquire about using Chase QuickPay or Citibank Zelle) or in-person verified delivery to the main office at Northridge Middle School (IF NO PAYMENT IS RECEIVED BY NOVEMBER 3RD, YOUR ENTRIES WILL BE DROPPED). NB: fines for missing judges are exceedingly high on purpose: we don't enjoy desperately looking for judges nor to squander the funds that could be used for students to pay for judges, so we offload the search for finding judges to teams.

The following teams have ALREADY COMPLETED FULL PAYMENT and registration for the tournament:

Rancho, Glendale, Centennial, ECC, N. Hope, Phoenix, Eagle, Nova, AFI, AHL, Rosemont, M. Brain., ACLA, iLead, VA, PSA (missing judge fines)

Filming of Rounds:

Schools which are new to Principios should take note that registering to compete in Principios constitutes your willingness to have your STUDENTS FILMED DURING ROUNDS, though no permission is granted to publicly post video footage nor to use it for anything other than educational purposes. There is no parental waiver or opt-out available. The only "opt out" is to not have that student register nor compete. Coaches bear the responsibility of informing students and parents of this wrinkle in our contest. We allow filming so as to promote & provide traning materials for inexperienced coaching staffs and cash strapped schools which do not have access to audio-visual demonstration materials.

Event Rules:

Our version of SpAr is 1 minute Prep, 1 min. Affirimative/1st Topic, 1 min Negative/2nd Topic, 3 min alternating questions & answers to each other, 1 min neg summary, 1 min aff summary. This year, we will be adapting the "Stanford SpAr" model, which allows for the standing speaker whose turn it is to question to select a seated competitor with raised hand to pose the question to the other standing speaker. Speakers in SpAr are supposed to face the judge at all times as they speak and ask questions of each other.

Impromptu times for all levels are a 7 minute running clock (students choose when during the 7 minutes total time to start speaking, they are not told when to do so).

Informative for ES & MS does NOT allow props nor visual aides, following the NSDA rules for Middle School Informative

Original Duo is are for students writing their own two person dramatic/humorous script. Original Prose is for a single individual

Two events require the use of a binder: POI/Mixed Literature Interpretation (this second event is also called Thematic Interp in CA) and Prose Interpretation (but Prose Interpretation will not be offered at Principios, only at Orator's Cup in the late Spring).

Storyteling students are allowed to use a chair during their performance, but no guarantee of chair availability is made. If no chair is available, student must speak without one.

Award/Trophy Schema:

We will award trophies to 1st through 6th and medals to 7th through 12th for all ES events. We will award trophies & medals to a bit over half of the entries in MS, up to a max of 6 trophies and 6 medals. We will award trophies and medals to just under half of the entries in HS, up to a max of 6 trophies and 6 medals.

Congress Resolutions:

Round 1) Random "metal wand" searches should be required at every public school

Round 2) No public school student should be allowed to kneel, sit or otherwise protest during the playing of the national anthem

Round 3) Public colleges should no longer require non-STEM students to pass "advanced algebra" in order to graduate

Schedule (times can move up or down as needed, so stay on campus to not miss any changes)

07:30 - 07:45 Judge Orientation
07:45 - 07:55 Round 1 Judging Assignments
08:00 - 09:15 Round 1 - Pattern A events
09:30 - 10:45 Round 1 - Pattern B events
11:00 - 11:30 Brunch Break
11:30 - 11:40 Round 2 Judging Assignments
11:45 - 01:00 Round 2 - Pattern A
01:15 - 02:30 Round 2 - Pattern B
02:40 - 02:55 Round 3 Judging Assignments
03:00 - 04:10 Round 3 - Pattern A
04:20 - 05:30 Round 3 - Pattern B
06:00 - 07:00 Awards Assembly (elementary awards first, so that they may leave earlier)

Parking: There's street parking around the block, but parking will also be offered on playground (entrance on Herrick Ave)

Tab/Judges room & awards wil be held in the auditorium.
